AAA or Cell Phone-based roadside assistance?
I’ve essentially paid for 2.5 years worth of AAA in the past year. I had a $50 tow about 10-11 months ago because of a broken drive belt and then I got scammed by a locksmith “company” last week that charged me $125 to open my car. I found out that a legit company would have charged me $50.
Anyway, I need to get some coverage. AAA is about $60 a year. AT&T Roadside Assistance (that follows my phone and not my car) is $2.99 (or $36.00) per year. I know AAA gives you discounts at restaurants, stores, hotels, etc., but I’ve also heard that your info will be given to junk mailers and telemarketers. Going through the phone company requires me to have my cell phone with me at the time of service. What if my phone is locked in the car that I just locked myself out of?
Look into adding roadside service to your car insurance. It would probably be cheaper in the long run. You would call the nearest tow company when you needed a tow, your car unlocked, fuel delivered, or a tire changed, pay them, and your insurance will reimburse you.
If you really want the card and the 800 number, between your choices Triple A is the better choice. Cell phones all go through the same company for the roadside service, and most of the providers have dropped them, so you will typically have a 3 hour wait before you get service. Also their limit is $50 so you would have to pay cash for anything over $50. If you’ve ever heard the horror stories about getting your phone replaced using the “Lost or broken phone coverage”, that’s the same company that does the roadside service.
Hint: If your keys are locked in the car, a tow company is usually cheaper than a locksmith.
