help!! trying to buy first car?
I just turned 19 and i am an E-3 in the navy, which is about $1600 base pay starting january 2009. Right now my only financial responsibilities are a cell phone and and internet bill which total about $150 together. Anyways rates at Navy federal credit union for a used car up to 36 months is 4.75%. So how do i calculate how much i’ll pay per month on a vehicle that cost like $10000? Also what’s the best way to calculate insurance b4 i get the car. I live in Ga ,but im stationed in SC.
Save your extra pay, wait 8 months and buy the car with cash. That way you’ll have no car payments and you won’t be paying the credit union for the right to use their money, when you could have saved for a short period of time and not owed anyone else anything.
There’s no telling where you’ll be in 8 months and your car may have to sit someplace while your out at sea (if you’re assigned to ship duty). You’ll collect interest on the savings, making more money in the process. Depending where you are stationed in SC, you can buy a bus pass to get where you need to go off base, or catch rides with sailors you know that have cars.
You’re thinking short term when right now. And with that amount of extra cash each month, you need to start thinking long term. If you’re not planning to make a career out of military service, you need to start saving for more important things like a house and retirement. The people in bad financial situations right now are those that didn’t think long term when they had no expenses – the same situation you’re in right now. Protect yourself NOW.
