How do you keep an existing cell phone number/provider when buying a new “no-plan phone” from a 3rd party?

We are Verizon cell phone customers and plan to stay with Verizon for the foreseeable future. We want to upgrade a Verizon cell phone to a better phone before the wireless contract is complete. Since we are only about a year into the plan, we do not qualify for a discount or a rebate on a new phone from Verizon. Therefore, we don’t want to buy the phone from Verizon. Instead, we want to buy a new “no-plan Verizon-compatible cell phone” from a third party. We want to keep the same phone number and, again, we want to stay with Verizon. What steps are required to do this? Isn’t Verizon obligated to activate the new phone with the old phone number? Is there a fee for this? We haven’t been able to get a straight answer from Verizon. Thanks!! Hope y’all have a great holiday season!!

After you buy the new phone you will need to do an “ESN change” on your account: either go to a local Verizon wireless dealer and ask them to do an ESN change for you or you can call verizon and ask then to do it, or there is a way to do it yourself online at Verizons web site. There should be no charge or if you go to a dealer you may be charged around $5
