Is it possible to terminate a cell phone contract without paying the fee?
Sprint has messed up my bill 3 months straight and made adjustments 3 months straight. my wife called up and they were taking this very lightly. laughing, transferring her from person to person. all we want is to pay what we owe and cut ties with sprint. i have a whole year left on contract.
Unfortunately you cannot get out of your contract without paying the early termination fee. I know that it’s frustrating and it doesn’t seem fair, but poor customer service does not allow you out of your contract without penalty.
I have no problems believing your issues with Sprint…I work for a competitor and we all know that they have not only the worst customer service ratings in the industry but some of the worst in the nation of all consumer based businesses.
The only bright spot is that based on a ruling out of a California Superior court, many cell phone companies now prorate the amount of your termination fee. This means that the further you are into your contract the less it cost to get out. The preliminary, tenative judgement on this case ordered Sprint/Nextel to pay customers $18.2 million dollars in reimbursements. Of course an appeal is pending, but in the mean time it means you do have more leverage than before.
I would seriously think it through and talk to Sprint about your desire to possibly change service. I would however recommend that you ask to speak with a supervisor or go into a store and ask to speak with the manager who SHOULD call customer service on your behalf.
If you cannot get any help and they are not offering you a prorated termination fee the next best thing is to contact your state attorney general’s office as they typically have more clout than the BBB when it comes to getting companies to listen to consumer complaints.
Hope it all turns out okay for you!
