cell phones for sale no plans

Why can’t you use your own cell phone to start a cell phone plan?
I would like to start a prepaid wireless plan, but am not thrilled with the options they offer for phones. I see all these phones out there that say, “$49.99 with 2 yr service contract–$279.99 without service.” Obviously, you can purchase a phone without a contract, but for some reason that phone is useless, because I have not found a service yet that will allow me to use that phone. They require that I buy one of the phones that they offer. NET10 offers a phone (online) that I like for $80. Meanwhile I can get the same phone from Tracphone (at Wal-Mart) for $30. I would like to buy the $30 phone from Tracphone and simply activate it through NET10. However, I realize that the Tracphone comes pre-programmed etc., and it wouldn’t work. Why then, do they offer phones for sale without service if no service will allow you to use them? All I want is to find the phone I want, for the service I want, and the price I want. I have seen all three options out there, but not together.
Some phones simply won’t work because they don’t fit the network. If you get a GSM phone that uses sim cards, however, it should work with providers such as t-mobile that offer sim card plans. But you cannot buy your own phone to use with Sprint, unless it’s a PCS phone.
Call customer service and ask what kinds of phones work with their service and tell them you want to purchase your own phone. Most stores do not know or don’t want to tell you this stuff, but customer service might be smarter. If not the first time, call back and talk to another person
