Cell Phone Gurus: Keeping plan, but switching phones?

Okay, here’s the deal: My current cell phone plan originated with AT&T Wireless back in the day. The contract has since expired and I’m month-to-month under the current terms. It just so happens that I love my current terms because they are far superior to anything the market is offering today (suitable for my needs). When I inquired about upgrading my phone, the company will only do it if I switch over to one of their current plans. Obviously, I’d rather not; so I’m opting to buy an unlocked phone (also GSM compatible), plug my SIM card from my old phone into it, and hope I’ve accomplished keeping my current plan and upgrading my phone.

Does this sound feasible? What other options do I have?
Add’l info: Both my phone and my phone to-be phone are Sony Ericsonn.

That should work fine. You might need to check and see if you need to get a new sim card though, some of the newer phones require the 64k or 3G cards. You also want to make sure that your phone is quad band, or at least able to access the 850 network. Cingular (now ATT) uses the 850 GSM network in some cities, so if your phone doesn’t have that, you will have problems.

You should be able to get a new SIM card from the store, either for free, or you might need to pay $25 (I think).
