What’s up with unlocked cell phones?

I am a Verizon customer and I want a new phone, but Verizon phones suck and I want to buy an unlocked phone. I need to know what kind of unlocked phone can I buy. I hear lots of stuff about certain phones not working with Verizon because they do not use SIM cards or something. So the questions are….Can I buy any unlocked cell phone to use with Verizon? What specs do I need to make sure my cell phone has? How much crap is Verizon going to give me with my new phone?

You can’t use unlocked phones with Verizon. Verizon’s phones and network are CDMA, which doesn’t use sim cards. Unlocked refers to GSM and iDEN phones and means they can use sim cards from any compatible provider. GSM, iDEN and CDMA are completely different technologies and are not compatible with each other.
