pay as you go cell phones for kids

When should a child have a cell phone?
My kids are 2, 9,12, 13, & 15. Three of them want cell phones and think mom and dad should pay for them. When I was growing up I didn’t have a cell phone, not until I was 27 years old. Every where they go they have access to a phone. Should a child have one just because they want one? I say if they had a job and were driving they could get a pay as you go phone. Untill then they don’t have a need for one if they want to talk to their friends they can use the home phone. If they go to the mall and walk around without mom and dad they can borrow moms cell. I just don’t think kids need to have a phone on hand and ear 24/7. My oldest spent the night with a friend who has a cell of her own they called up some boys in the middle of the night and snuck out to go hang with them, not good and not safe! Now we have the friends leave the phones down stairs when they go to bed when they sleep over, is there anything wrong with that? What are your thoughts on kids with cell phones?
Unless the kids are driving.. they dont need cells. Even then a pay-as-you-go one is enough.
Cell phones are a luxury item. I didnt have one until I was in my 20′s either. I dont understand why kids think they “need” one either.. they ussually use it just to chat with friends.. which can be done with the home phone!
Kids also like phones for all the gadgets like taking pics, txting, etc.. once again, an expensive luxury that the kids expect you to pay for!
There is one phone that I reccommend for kids use.. the parent can program in approved numbers, and the kid can only call and recieve calls from those numbers.. Its called firefly
