Why do Asian countries have faster internet and cell phones than the U.S.?
I have numberous Korean frineds that go home sometimes, and bring back cell phones that the U.S. doesn’t even have a network capable of handling yet.
News stories state that Japan and China internet speeds average gigs per minute, rather than the U.S. megs per minute. They download (illegal) movies in minutes.
I thought the U.S. should be on top of everything. Is it a Federal FCC thing keeping us from faster/better stuff? Is it capitalistic lazyness milking what we have, or whats the deal?
The US federal government has failed to subsidize or encourage the capital investment required for faster internet speeds.
You can get much faster bandwidth if you want it here, it is just absurdly expensive.
The general solution is for the US government to subsidize network upgrades to the major Telcos, under the condition they keep prices low.
Richard. Your estimated cost is way off. Verizon is turning their entire network to fiber only, and i believe they are spending in the neighborhood of 30 billion.
AT&T is currently placing fiber to the node, and spending about 5 billion.
I think the total cost of new fiber to all of the 100 largest cities would probably be in the neighborhood of a $50-100 billion dollar effort.
